New Dir. of Recreation to lead structural changes

A former Tulane University Recreational Director has been hired to lead structural changes within the University's Recreation Sport Programs and Services. In June two high-ranking administrators from the department retired, giving Athletic Director Steve Bilsky the opportunity to rectify some inadequacies he saw within the programming. As the new director of recreation, Michael Diorka plans to improve the quality of facilities and programs for the "regular student." Two preliminary ideas include creating an Advisory Board and a web site, including dates and times or events, for the department. "During my first few weeks at Penn I plan to walk around and get to know as many faces as possible," Diorka said. "Then I will be able to begin to gauge the needs of the Penn community and the community will know that I am here." Other goals for Diorka include upgrading facilities and creating new and innovative programs for recreation. The director will arrive on August 26 and plans to spread his philosophy on the role of recreation in education. "Penn students are at the University for an excellent educational experience, but 70 percent of learning takes place outside of the classroom," Diorka said. "Recreation programs should play a major role in enhancing the enjoyment of the college experience." Diorka said that in the past there was a perception that his field was not significant. He is hoping to quickly change the image. The 1970 graduate of St. Joseph's University has spent all of his professional life as an instructor. He has served Tulane by helping to develop and implement 30 intramural sports activities as well as overseeing the administration of 30 club sport programs. Diorka also served as an Adjunct Professor, teaching in the Sport and Exercise Services department. "I really enjoyed my time spent at Tulane, but Penn is a great school with great opportunities," he said. "Also, it is like going home for me." Diorka, a Philadelphia native, also worked as Assistant Director of Intercollegiate Athletics for Recreation and Athletic Facilities for St. Joseph's from 1981 to 1988. He helped in the development of recreational, intramural, and intercollegiate policies for 23 sports. He also served as an Assistant Cross Country/Track Coach for the Hawks from 1978-1988 and has served on St. Joseph's Alumni Board of Governors since 1970. Diorka received his master's of education degree from West Chester State College and his administrative certification from Villanova University, both in 1975. He is currently completing work toward a doctorate degree at Temple University. "I am really looking forward to working with the students, faculty and staff at Penn," Diorka said. "I am going to increase the general involvement in Athletics at the University."
