Sudden-death kills M. Lax

It was deja vu for Penn as Cornell came fromIt was deja vu for Penn as Cornell came frombehind to win for the second year in a row Much to the chagrin of the Penn men's lacrosse team, history has a habit of repeating itself. The Quakers (3-5, 0-2 Ivy League) fell 12-11 to Cornell Saturday at Franklin Field, blowing a two-goal lead in the final 2 minutes, 42 seconds of regulation. The Big Red scored the game-winning goal with 2:37 left in sudden-death overtime. During last year's matchup, the Quakers allowed Cornell to tie the game with 47 seconds left in the fourth quarter and then allowed the Big Red to score the game-winning goal with three seconds left in regulation. "I thought we had them for most of the game," Penn goalie Matt Schroeder said. "The same thing happened last year. We had a big lead, and we blew it." Vern Briggs led the Quakers with three goals, while Jon Cusson had two goals and two assists. Cornell attack Brian Younge fueled the Big Red comeback with an extraordinary four-goal, one-assist effort. The Big Red began the game by taking an early 2-1 lead. Penn scored with one second left in the first quarter to tie the game at two. The Red and the Blue went on a tear in the second quarter -- outscoring Cornell 5-0. Vern Briggs led the Quaker charge, scoring all three of his goals in a span of 2 minutes, 38 seconds. With a 7-2 halftime lead, Penn scored two more goals to start the third quarter. With the score at 9-2 after eight consecutive Quaker goals, the game seemed all but out of reach. But Cornell clawed its way back in the second half. The Big Red brought the game to 10-9 at 9:39 of the fourth quarter, and Younge scored with 29 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 11 and send the game to overtime. In the sudden-death overtime period, Younge came through once again for Cornell, scoring his fourth goal of the game on a low shot to the left corner of the net that skipped by Schroeder. "I think the team is pretty disappointed and upset that we lost," senior attack Andy Crofton said. "We played pretty hard and we played to win, but the ball didn't bounce our way in the end. "It was just two pretty closely matched teams going after it, and we missed our opportunity to win the game. We didn't put the ball in the net when we had to." The Quakers will travel to Princeton Wednesday, where they will face off against the Tigers. Princeton is a perennial lacrosse powerhouse and the reigning Ivy League champions. "I don't think we're going to let this loss set us back," Schroeder said. "We're excited about Princeton. We think we can be pretty competitive with them."
