The Quakers, instead, were finishing up their Ivy League schedule with a game against Yale in New Haven, Ct. Unfortunately for Penn, it was not an even tradeoff for the team. Not only did the Quakers (4-5, 3-3 Ivy League) miss Spring Fling, but they lost to the Elis, 10-6. The Elis used their deep bench and frequent substitutions to wear down the Quakers. "I think we were pretty much equal," Penn sophomore midfielder Sue Pierce said. "But they were subbing a lot, and we weren't subbing as much as they were. That caused us to be a little tired. We also weren't catching and passing as well as they were." The Quakers jumped out strong, scoring the game's first goal. But as has happened so often during this season, the lead dwindled away. By halftime, the Elis had moved ahead, 6-4. It wasn't until the second half, though, that Yale proved itdominance. "We were leading for a while," Penn senior midfielder and team captain Jessica Gilhorn said. "We played a pretty good first half. It was the second half that got to us. But they never really had a big lead until the end." Despite the loss, Penn's performance was not without its strong points. Gilhorn led the way offensively by scoring two of Penn's six goals. "I think my game was pretty good," Gilhorn said. "I was stronger on attack than I have been in a lot of games. But I wasn't that happy with my defense." In addition, Alex Brill-Edwards had a strong defensive performance. "She really stepped up and shut her girl down," Gilhorn said. "If someonme wasn't able to contain a girl, Alex really helped out for that. She looked great." Although the Quakers had to miss much of Fling for the game, they did not let that bring them down. "Missing Fling is in the back of our heads, but none of us were bothered by it," Gilhorn said. "If anything, we were saying let's win so it's that much better when we get back." The Quakers will finish up their season with two non-Ivy games. On Wednesday, Penn will travel to New Jersey to take on Rutgers. On Thursday, the Quakers will finish the season on the road, taking on Lafayette. Penn was originally scheduled to take on the Leopards last Tuesday, but the game was canceled due to rain.
