The Graduate Student Lounge in Houston Hall is simply underutilized and not large enough to be seriously considered a reasonable facility. Graduate students complain that they don't even meet each other until they attend out-of-state conferences. Graduate students number 10,000 strong at the University, making up more than half of the student body. Therefore, any future planning by the University should logically account for such a large group of individuals. Graduates have pleaded for a suitable meeting place for some time and should be accommodated with space allocation on campus, perhaps in the Perelman Quadrangle. Whether it be a pub or a bigger lounge area, graduates are just as entitled as undergraduates to have some type of meeting place on campus. But beyond space, we encourage the University to more readily consider the needs of these students -- both academically and socially. Graduate students are here to learn, just like undergraduates, and their voice on campus should be treated with the same respect.
