Just when it thought it was safe, the Penn men's squash team was ambushed. In a devastating start to the most crucial stretch of the season, the Quakers (6-1) fell to Franklin and Marshall 5-4 yesterday in Lancaster. They just cannot figure out what happened. Steve Scharff and Andrew Braff, Nos. 1 and 2, lost, as did No. 5 Sanjay Nayar, No. 6 Chris Bradeen and No. 9 Leif Bergquist. No. 3 Craig Rappaport, No. 4 Ian Childs, No. 7 Carl Sibbern and No. 8 Ed Vincent won their matches. Penn was favored in almost every position, but Diplomats Jess Beline and Jess Feldman rallied to win two five-game matches in the Nos. 2 and 6 spots respectively. The Quakers now head into this weekend's matches with Trinity, Williams and Amherst still stinging from yesterday's loss. "There's really no explanation for what happened," Rappaport said. "I still think we were the better team. We were just outplayed by a determined F&M; team." In all probability, Rappaport said, the Quakers went into the match with the mentality they were supposed to beat F&M; (8-1). They played tentatively after attaining big leads, and once they let the Diplomats back into the match, they could not regain their momentum. "As far as this weekend, it's not going to be easy," Rappaport said. "Some guys are going to have to play better."
