M. X-Country comes in 17th place

The Penn men's cross country team ended its season with a 17th-place finish at the IC4As Saturday in Boston. Overall, the Quakers were disappointed with their performance because they had expected to finish closer to the top 10. Penn also got beaten by teams it had defeated earlier in the season, like Princeton, Cornell and Bucknell. "As a team, no one really ran that well," sophomore Matt Wilkinson said. The Quakers went out hard to put themselves in a good position to run the race. Penn ran a good first two miles at a pace of 9 minutes, 40 seconds. They planned to stay with No. 1 Georgetown. After the first two miles, senior co-captain Joe Hall made a move with Georgetown. Wilkinson tried to stay close to Hall, running about five seconds behind him. With a less than half a mile to go, Wilkinson caught Hall, and finished 56th overall. Hall finished 61st and senior co-captain Terry McLean ended the race 84th. "In the middle of the race, we couldn't respond. No one ran a good race," Wilkinson said. Penn was unable to stay with Georgetown in the front pack. Georgetown came in first overall with 81 points. Penn State, ranked 11th, edged No. 7 Dartmouth to take second place by two points. Villanova finished fourth followed by Boston University. Last year Penn finished the IC4As 19th overall. The Quakers were disappointed with their performance then also, feeling they ran below their capabilities. Penn will begin to train for the indoor track season which begins Dec. 3 at the Navy Invitational.
