Rudenstine, Harvard's 26th president, is the first to take such an action during his term. He took a small amount of time off in February due to accumulated fatigue, the Crimson said, and also utilized a leave during his time at Princeton University. In a statement, Harvard Medical School Dean Daniel Tosteson -- Rudenstine's medical spokesperson -- said the president is suffering from "severe fatigue and exhaustion of unknown origin." During his leave, Rudenstine will undergo tests on an outpatient basis aimed at determining the cause of his illness. Harvard Provost Albert Carnesale, who took office July 1, will serve as acting president while Rudenstine is on leave. In a statement released by the Harvard Corporation, the school's governing body, Rudenstine said his decision to take time off was made "with the greatest reluctance." --Lisa Levenson
