by LISA NEUBERGERby LISA NEUBERGERfour stars **** With a combined height of over 72 feet and a combined weight of over 1500 pounds, according to tuxedo-clad emcee College junior Chris Hampshire, Pennsylvania Six-5000 combined upbeat songs, dance moves and tasteless jokes in their 15 song show. The musical selection was a sampling of '80s songs peppered with more recent radio hits like darling "New Age Girl" by Dead Eye Dick and REM's latest hit "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" Following the traditions of Pennsylvania Six-5000, the show was filled with tuneful favorites from the '80s such as "Safety Dance" and "Walking on Sunshine." Highlights of the show included College junior David Hitchens singing the German lyrics to Nena's "99 Luftballoons," Hampshire belting out the chorus in Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded me With Science," and a trio of Hitchens, College sophomore Darren Ross and College junior Scott Harris harmonizing in the Grateful Dead's "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Showcasing their creativity, the group performed a parody of "I Ran" changing the words to make a spoof about O.J. Simpson and his failed attempt to escape authorities this summer in his white Bronco. In a memorable solo, Ross recounted O.J.'s woes singing, "They've got my DNA." Not limited solely to a cappella singing, the group energized their songs with dance routines and filled their song breaks with random jokes. In one mini-skit, Six-5000 President Peter Kim, a College senior, scared students with an orange plastic hockey mask and machete in an unlikely advertisement for Mentos candy. Taking the idea of a one-man band a little too seriously, College junior Dave Katowitz sounded more like a human orchestra. By beating his chest and thighs with his hands, Katowitz made sounds like African rhythm drums. Katowitz's musical abilities were only rivaled by the music director of the visiting Tufts Amalgamates who successfully imitated a set of bag-pipes. In an unprecedented response to a guest group, the Tufts Amalgamates received two spirited encores after their performance.
