Recent grad's cause of death still unknown

Initial laboratory reports from the post-mortem examination of Andrew Sawyer have been "inconclusive to date," according to Vice Provost for University Life Valarie Swain-Cade McCoullum. Sawyer, a recent University graduate, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after he was found unconscious in the Delta Delta Delta sorority house on Locust Walk early Saturday morning. He had been visiting the University to mourn the death of his good friend Mary McGuire, who was killed by a drunk driver late Friday night. McGuire, also a recent University graduate, was a former member of the Tri-Delt sorority and former chairperson of the Reach-A-Peer Helpline. She was living in San Antonio, Tex. where she was working for Habitat for Humanity. Sawyer, a brother in the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, was also a member of the men's swim team and the Naval Reserve Officer's Training Corps. "The one thing that I can say is that he had the ability, on the crummiest day in the dead of winter, when everyone was bitter at the whole world and gloomy and could barely muster up a hello -- he could get everyone to laugh," said Sawyer's friend and current men's swim team captain Jim McGinnis. Sawyer's funeral will be held on Wednesday in Connecticut. The University will provide buses for students who wish to attend, according to Tri-Delt President and College senior Melissa London. McGuire's death has hit the Tri-Delt house particularly hard, London said. "It's a devastating experience," London added. "We all feel really powerless. There's nothing we can do at this point, we just have to recover." She added that the University has been very supportive in the wake of the tragedy. "They've really gone out of their way to help with the healing process, particularly [the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs] and the Vice Provost's office," London said. The date for McGuire's funeral has not been set because her brother is out of the country. A memorial service at the University will be held after the two funerals -- most likely as a joint effort between the Tri-Delt and DEKE organizations. According to a representative from the medical examiner's office, further information on the cause of Sawyer's death will be available in two to four weeks, pending toxicology test results. During an initial investigation, no bruises were found on Sawyer's body, according to Provost Stanley Chodorow. This may rule out that Sawyer's death was caused by a fall.
