With the tragedy of his death and the horror of such random violence staring us in the face, we owe it both to him and to ourselves to fight for change. Our feelings of communal anger and grief are natural, but can do no good if they are not translated into concrete action. President Judith Rodin, who attended the march, said she has no new anti-crime intervention to offer the community at this time. It's time that she start looking for one. Adding insult to injury and underscoring the necessity for a coherent plan, a person was robbed at gunpoint minutes after the rally at 46th and Pine Street -- one block from where demonstrators were assembled. We urge Rodin to meet with students and listen to their specific safety concerns. An open forum featuring Rodin, University Police Commissioner John Kuprevich, and representatives from Philadelphia Police in which panelists could address specific concerns would be a step in the right direction. We encourage the Undergraduate Assembly and other student groups to organize such a meeting. Furthermore, the University should design a comprehensive crime-prevention plan, enlisting the help of outside consultants and experts, like it did with dormitory security. This is one problem Judith Rodin must address immediately. If she is equal to her reputation, we trust we will see action before crime edges even closer to campus.
