W. Lax coasts to easy victory

Lori Frutkin, who leads the Penn women's lacrosse team in scoring, added eight more goals to her total last night, helping the Quakers to defeat West Chester 16-12. The unranked Golden Rams (1-2) were not supposed to give 12th-ranked Penn (6-3, 1-1 Ivy League) much difficulty, and they didn't. The Quakers held at least a three-goal lead for most of the game, including the entire second half. Also contributing to the Quakers' offensive output were Melissa Sage, Katie Burg, Amy Shapiro and Amy Tarr, who all scored goals against West Chester's less-then-stellar defense. As Frutkin and the rest of the Penn attack scored at will, seniors Fran Maguire and Missy Hecht anchored the defensive effort for Penn, and held the Golden Bears in check. "[Frutkin] was jumping all over the field," freshman Seung Ah Byun said. "If you know Lori, she gets very excited. Whenever coach [Anne Sage] took her out, she was very eager to get back in. She played great." The Quakers will need another strong performance from Frutkin tomorrow when the team faces No. 9 Dartmouth (2-3, 0-1). Dartmouth has struggled so far this season. The Big Green is coming off a 10-8 loss to Vermont, and lost its only Ivy League game 10-9 to Princeton. Regardless, Penn is expecting a very difficult game. While Dartmouth will try to prevent another eight-goal performance by Frutkin, the Quaker "D" will have its hands full with junior Lauren Holleran, who leads the Big Green attack with 24 goals and four assists. Last year, the Big Green whipped the Quakers 14-3, but this year's Quakers seem to have found the winning touch. If Frutkin and the rest of the Penn attack can continue to find the holes in its opponents defense, the Quakers should earn their second Ivy League win, which would match last year's season total.
