Students' summer plans differ

As another summer rolls around, students are planning everything from trips abroad to jobs in laboratories. "I'm going to Seoul, Korea through a program at Penn," said College freshman Lucy Yi. "I'll be tutoring students in English." Others are leaving the country to study and receive credit toward their majors. College freshman Kate Lester will be going to Edinburgh, Scotland where she will put on a show with five other theater majors. "I haven't been able to get a job this summer because of the extra time spent on campus, but I think the opportunity is definitely worth the sacrifice," she said. Some say they are staying at the University to work on scientific projects and do intense research. "I'm working with my physics teacher, Penn students and students from other universities," said Engineering freshman Thomas Warner. "We are going to build something similar to the Hubble telescope." College freshman Jane Loman is going to do some research with Jacqueline Tanaka, assistant biochemical and biophysics professor. "We're testing the effects of an African root on cocaine," Tanaka said. But not all students will be involved in academic pursuits. College freshman Kenneth Letcher said he plans to go through some tough physical training this summer. "I'm training for a national swim meet," he said. "I'm also head coaching a summer league team." And many students said they plan to participate in the traditional summer activities. "I'm partying like hell [and] getting in shape," said Wharton sophomore Brian Kahn.
