Penn's Way splits up donations

For the third year running, a United Way umbrella organization named Specific Care, Inc. received the most donations in the annual Penn's Way campaign, coordinators said yesterday. Penn's Way, which solicits contributions from University employees for 16 charitable organizations, collected $370,000 during this year's October to January drive. Specific Care, Inc., which funds several area human resources organizations, received $159,859. Donations to the other charities are as follows: ·ACCESS -- Active Community Coalition Efforts Sponsored by Students -- receives $3,013. ·African-American Community Fund, $3,074. ·Black United Fund, $5,737. ·Bread and Rose, $16, 166. ·Catholic Charities Appeal, $12, 240. ·Children and Youth at Risk, $26,059. ·Elderly at Risk Fund, $8,251. ·Families at Risk Fund, $14, 537. ·Hungry and Homeless, $49,843. ·Jewish Federation, $11,909. ·Latino Fund, $1,225. ·United Negro College Fund, $10,185. ·Women Service Fund, $42,208. The Wistar Institute's donations to Penn's Way are tabulated separately. Wistar employees donated $1,115 to the drive. This year, 40 percent of University employees donated to Penn's Way, the largest percentage in the three-year history of the campaign. But even with more faculty donating to the drive, this year's campaign fell short of last year's goal of $425,000, and the $400,000 raised in the 1991-92 campaign. After last year's disappointing drive, the Penn's Way committee conducted a survey to see why people decided to donate to the campaign. Based on information obtained in the survey, the committee decided not to set a goal for this year's campaign.
