Thieves take $7,000 in goods

Student robbed of engagement ring, Cartier watch A University student was robbed at gunpoint last night of clothing, merchandise and jewelry valued at about $7,000, said University Police Sgt. Joseph Risoli. The incident occurred just after 9:30 p.m. on St. Marks Square between Spruce and Pine streets, police said. Police said the stolen merchandise included an engagement ring, a Cartier watch, a leather jacket, a number of sweaters and a wallet containing $50 in cash. According to Risoli, the male student was robbed by four males of his belongings, which were packed into three black clothing bags. The complainant reported that one of the males was carrying a gun. The four males were described as between 6-foot-1 and 6-foot-2, wearing dark ski jackets, ski masks and blue jeans. None was apprehended and the complainant, who lives in the 200 block of South 42nd Street, could not identify anyone, Risoli said. But several men, who may have been involved in the incident, were spotted heading west on Locust Street near 45th Street shortly after the incident. Philadelphia police and University Police are working on the case, police said. University Police Sgt. Tom Messner said he does not know how the robbery compares to past robberies because the department does not track robberies by values. But Messner said he remembers an incident in which a man was robbed of his Rolex watch, an expensive brand which can be worth up to $25,000.
