Psi. U. will reapply for recognition

Frat could return next fall The Psi Upsilon fraternity, better known as the Castle, is attempting to return to the University. Psi Upsilon could reapply for recognition this semester, based on the terms of the fraternity's suspension, said Mark Williams, executive director of Psi Upsilon's national office. "We are in the process of doing that," Williams said. He added he doesn't expect the fraternity to return until next fall, even though it could be approved for re-recognition as early as the spring. The University revoked Psi Upsilon's charter in 1990 as a result of an incident in which fraternity brothers kidnapped a member of a rival fraternity. A brother from Delta Psi, better known as Saint Anthony's Hall, was abducted from his off-campus apartment, handcuffed to a pole and had racial slurs yelled at him by several Psi Upsilon brothers in January 1990. All members of Psi Upsilon were ultimately kicked out of their house at the center of the campus, the Castle. Williams said he realizes a new chapter of Psi Upsilon would not be able to live in the Castle. The Castle is now used as a residence for the Community Service Living Learning Program. "We would go out of our way to let [new members] know that they probably never would see the inside of the Castle as a residence for them again," Williams said. But Associate Vice Provost for University Life Larry Moneta said he believes Psi Upsilon and the University are still involved in litigation concerning whether Psi Upsilon can return to the Castle if re-recognized. Nevertheless, Williams said the fraternity – if it is recognized in the near future – probably would not have a house for some time. The reapplication process has just begun. Williams said the fraternity has notified the University of its desire to start another chapter on campus. Next, Psi Upsilon must make presentations in front of the Interfraternity Council, Greek Alumni Council and the Fraternity and Sorority Advisory Board. Williams said each group must agree to allow Psi Upsilon back on campus. But, Williams said, the Greek Alumni Council will not meet again until February 1994. "Nothing happens until all three groups hear our presentation. The earliest this would happen is in February," Williams said. IFC President Morris Massel said Psi Upsilon would "follow a standard procedure" in its application to be recognized once again by the University. The Alpha Chi Rho brother added there are "no guarantees" Psi Upsilon will be welcomed back into the University's Greek system. Still, Williams added the fraternity is eager to return to campus after an absence of over three years. "We would [recruit new members] as soon as someone says it is OK," Williams said. "Of course we need to do it in confines of rules and regulations of the University."
