There is more to Annenberg than Communications 226. Enter the Undergraduate Communications Society formed last semester in an effort to unite communications majors. Society President Laura Lieberman explained that the club is intended to lend a much needed voice to the Annenberg undergraduate population. "Sometimes we don't get a lot of attention," the College junior said. "We are lobbying for rights we don't get." Vice President and College junior Robyn Allen said the club provides an opportunity to "bring all the communication majors together." "We just thought there needed to be something at Annenberg to bring everyone together," Allen said. "There was no common background." Lieberman said she hopes the society will push to open up classes to more students and will call for the implementation of an advising system for majors. Co-founder and College senior J.J. Cutler added that the organization will have both an academic and a social slant, offering opportunities for student-faculty interaction as well as chances to experience first-hand the ins and outs of life in the media. "It's a good way for undergraduates to meet, for undergraduates and professors to meet, for anyone interested in any sort of publishing or film-making to get their voices heard," he said. "I think the hype over [Annenberg Dean Kathleen] Jamieson is great, but there's a whole lot more to the major than political communications." Allen stressed that the group will focus both on Annenberg and the surrounding community. "There are things to do within Annenberg as well as outside," she said, adding that the group will be planning trips "to media places so people can shadow professionals to see what they do." The group's first event is scheduled for tomorrow evening, when local television anchor Larry Kane will speak in Annenberg room 108 at 5:15 p.m.
