The Daily Pennsylvanian

LETTER: 898-Bandwagon

It happens once again: Students complain about something, a University department responds by implementing a new system, The Daily Pennsylvanian becomes a megaphone for all of the students who are now against the change. The University Transit Services (formally Escort Service) have implemented a new system of transit on campus. Although it is still quite new -- and event the department will admit that some kinks need to be ironed out -- the University community, led by the DP has decried it as inconvenient, unsafe and confusing. Well, wasn't it the DP that complained constantly about the old system? Why can't anyone give this system a chance? I consider myself a heavy Escort Service user (at least once a day coming home from work) and I have no qualms about the service. The average wait is 10 minutes -- the same as when I used to call for a ride -- and it is not difficult to find a transit stop. To the people that are complaining that the system is confusing I ask, are you Penn students or not? How can the map in the Transit brochure be confusing? Or didn't you bother to even pick one up? There is an A, B, C, X and Loop shuttle. Each route is clearly marked. Sounds pretty easy to me. Isn't it a bit paranoid to think that this new system is some plot by the University to move students back into dormitories? Lighten up! The University cannot afford to buy a van for each and every student to personally escort them from place to place. Try the new system for a little while before automatically jumping on the bandwagon to complain. It may not be perfect, but it's a step in the right direction. ADAM SHERR College '90
