That's why we'll be glad to break for The Practical Scholar, a comprehensive new atlas to University academics in the spirit of The Practical Penn. Using it should be much like clearing all those poorly-folded state road maps out of your car's glove compartment. The Student Committee on Undergraduate Education advertises the new book as compiling information from 25 separate University publications, and discussing all four undergraduate schools. It's kind of an owner's manual to your University education. It has essays on academics, and talks about graduation requirements, course selection, school programs, creative alternatives, and University services such as advising, computing and career planning. Best of all, it's free. (With the purchase of a Penn education, of course.) Throughout its history, SCUE has continuously lobbied for more varied educational options. It is therefore appropriate that SCUE put The Practical Scholar together, since navigating University requirements gets a little more complicated with each new route to a student's graduation destination. If you feel you may be lost or going in circles at the University, The Practical Scholar could be the place to stop and ask for directions. Throw out all those outdated University guides and let your fingers do the walking -- it may help you find a shortcut, or take the road less travelled by. Students will receive copies of the book in fraternity and sorority houses and dormitories later this month. Off-campus residents can walk down to Penn Student Agency's Houston Hall Office later this month to pick the book up, along with copies of the new student directories. We'll talk about the student directories later.
