As I began to tear apart Bill Madison's column "Membership Has Its Privileges" (DP 2/4/92), I wondered how my reply could be systematic and cogent. Obviously, Madison didn't wonder how to do this. If the fraternity/sorority issue is dead, then drop it. If Madison believes that Greeks are merely members of social organizations, maybe he should stroll down our shamefully "homogeneous" Locust Walk. He will see sorority sisters and non-sisters together joining together for charity. Or he will see fraternity brothers shaking cans to raise money for centers to help children in need. He fails to see that the community of "oneness" is reaching out to the community of the diverse to help the community of the needy. The Greek system is not exclusive. My friends, it is inclusive. We are not forced to assimilate. We are encouraged to expand our horizons. The system opens itself to change and improvement everyday. I appreciate Madison's column while I do not agree with it. I appreciate that he does not like the Greek system because he doesn't feel its open. Why doesn't he practice what he preaches and be open enough to see that the Greek system is right for many members of our diverse community? BROOKE WURST College '94
