At the end of the 2023 football season, the Quakers have seen five seniors enter the transfer portal according to On3 Recruiting — linebacker Jonathan Melvin, defensive backs Kendren Smith and Shiloh Means, defensive lineman Joey Slackman, and offensive lineman Jack Purcell — to take advantage of their final year of collegiate eligibility. Before they leave Penn, here’s a look back at their last season as Quakers.

While Penn field hockey (7-10, 5-2 Ivy) had an up and down year, forward/midfielder and captain Allison Kuzyk did not. The senior was incredible throughout the season, and her play recently earned her a spot on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association 2023 Division I Senior team.

It was just a little under a month ago when Penn men's basketball pulled off one of its biggest upsets in recent years, defeating then-No. 21 ranked Villanova 76-72 in the Palestra. While it may have been every man for themselves as the Penn faithful rushed the court, it was actually the 2-3 zone that helped the Quakers earn just its second win against the Wildcats in the last 20 years.

On Nov. 28, Middle East Center director Harun Küçük submitted his resignation amidst the University’s alleged violations of academic freedom. Most notably, members of Penn’s progressive Jewish society Chavurah have been threatened with disciplinary action upon scheduling a screening of “Israelism,” a documentary that critically explores a “deepening generational divide over modern Jewish identity” amidst Israel’s “brutal” treatment of Palestinian citizens.

We’ve all received the climate change survey from Penn. If anything comes of it, this is a positive step, though it does not really touch on Penn’s actual climate policy. While ideas that we see in this survey, such as offering more courses about climate change, are important, such ideas do not mean much when the institution providing those courses is actively contributing to the climate crisis. This brings us to Penn's "audacious" Climate and Sustainability Action Plan. Seeking to “Pennovate” a greener future, the Penn Administration has given themselves nearly two decades (until 2042) to make the campus carbon neutral. When introducing this task, then-president Amy Gutmann compared it to the moon landing.
