On Jan. 24, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office cleared four University Police Department officers of any criminal wrongdoing for fatally shooting a suspect in the Nov. 21, 2010 carjacking that ended in a gunfight on Locust Walk and 40th Street.
According to a press release from the District Attorney’s office, Officers Benjamin Mauro, Fred Nichols, Greg Everage and Sergeant David Adler defended themselves when they shot 18-year-old Karl Sappleton.
At about 3 a.m., Sappleton allegedly fired at police while fleeing after stealing and crashing a gray Cadillac into the 40th Street and Locust Walk barrier. Officers returned fire and hit the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Sappleton was with 19-year-old Leslie Mosby, who fled from the car crash and was apprehended later on the 3900 block of Walnut Street.
Mosby has a formal arraignment scheduled for Feb. 1. He faces four criminal charges, including attempted murder and aggravated and simple assault.
