In line with the Year of Water theme, Penn Reading Project coordinators announced that the 2010-2011 book selection will be The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters by Rose George.

In her book, George — who is a Penn alumna with a master’s degree in international politics — addresses global sanitation health problems and the need to provide all people with functioning toilets.

The book also addresses questions of environmental sustainability, which is an essential component of the Year of Water project that involves a multidisciplinary inquiry across Penn’s 12 schools and many resource centers, Director of Academic Initiatives in the Office of the Provost David Fox explained.

“While the topic lends itself to humor, it also addresses some very serious issues,” Fox said.

George will be visiting the University either during the Penn Reading Project discussions that take place during New Student Orientation or at another time later in the year.

“We like to pick books that will make for very lively conversation, and this year’s selection is bound to do so,” Fox said.
