The men's soccer team's loss to underdog La Salle on a late goal two weeks ago could have been the turning point in the Quakers' season. It could have taken the wind out of the team's sails at the worst possible time - right before the onset of the Ivy League season.
The women's soccer team probably thought its game against Temple on Wednesday would serve as the perfect way to gain momentum for the Ivy opener against Harvard. Twenty-one shots and 21 misses later, the Quakers (4-1-1) found themselves trying to regain their composure and bounce back against a battle-tested Crimson team.
AMBLER, Pa. - There were plenty of perplexing things about the women's soccer game at Temple yesterday. How did Penn manage to get off 21 shots? How could Temple muster only three? But most bewildering of all - how did the Owls walk away with the win? Temple managed to take down a clearly superior Penn squad 2-0 at Ambler Field in a game that the Quakers (4-1-1) would like to forget.
Penn graduate Sam Burley ran the third leg of an American record-setting 4x800m relay in Brussels, Belgium on Aug. 25. Burley represented the United States at the Memorial Van Damme meet and broke the world record of 7:03.89 and the U.S. record of 7:06.5. But he and his team never officially held the world record - the Kenyan team ran a time of 7:02.
After just two seasons coaching Penn, women's squash coach Jack Wyant has been named coach of the U.S. Junior Women's Squash Team. The team will compete in the world championships in Hong Kong next year, but meanwhile, Wyant will continue coaching the Quakers.
