This Saturday, both Penn men’s and women’s basketball will kick-off their seasons with the informal Red and Blue scrimmages in the Palestra. The scrimmages will be intrasquad, so for their first taste of competition for the long season, the Quakers will find themselves. 

The Quakers (4-6-3, 2-1-1 Ivy) will be entering the match with serious momentum after a late overtime volley edged them atop Dartmouth last week at Rhodes Field. A similar task awaits them this time around, as both Penn and Yale (8-3-2, 2-1-1) are sitting on seven points and need three more to sustain their title hopes.

Sailing mainly against schools with varsity teams, the Quakers have consistently found themselves near the top of the national rankings over the past several years. The women’s team is currently ranked 16th in the country, while the co-ed unit stands as the 25th best team nationally.

The Seattle native was invited to be one of 11 girls on the U24 mixed team, who will be traveling to Australia in early 2018 for the WFDF U24 Championship. 

Penn women’s soccer senior Erica Higa only had one shot on Saturday, but that one shot was enough to earn her this week’s DP Sports' Player of the Week.

Penn women’s soccer recorded one of its most exciting wins of the season against Dartmouth this past Saturday night in dramatic fashion. 

At Friday’s Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, the men’s side came in 24th of 35 total teams, and the women placed 31st from a pool of 33. Saturday’s Princeton Invitational saw the Quakers finish in seventh of 21 teams on the men’s side and ninth on the women’s of 20.

The Red and Blue split their matches this weekend, suffering a 2-0 loss in an Ivy conference match to Columbia, and recovering for a 4-2 route over in their final City Six match in the schedule against local rival Temple.

For the third straight weekend, the Red and Blue took one of two Ivy matches, beating the Lions in a five-set thriller on Friday before falling to Cornell the next night in four sets to fall to fifth place in the Ivy League at the end of the first half of conference play.

On Friday, Penn volleyball will travel to New York City to face off against Columbia, then hitting the road again to play against Cornell in Ithaca the following day. Preparing to play their final stretch of away matches, the Red and Blue look to gain valuable wins over the course of the weekend.

In the season’s first weekend road trip, the Quakers will face Columbia on Friday night and crosstown rival Temple on Sunday afternoon, looking for two crucial wins just past the halfway point in their season.

The Quakers hope to continue their upward trend this weekend at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
