A win against the Tigers would not only give Penn a sweep over its rival, but would also solidify the Red and Blue's standing atop the Ivy League. Ahead of the big game, three DP sportswriters made their cases for the biggest keys to a Quaker victory.

Three-for-one deals are never bad. That is what fencing fans get whenever they watch a match. Though a first time watcher or casual fan may have trouble noticing the differences, fencing’s three forms — sabre, epee, and foil — are all very nuanced.

Therefore, it should not be a surprise that student-athletes highlight these reasons to not only justify their involvement with sports, but also their involvement with Greek life.

Mark Andrew is shattering school and Ivy League records — and he’s still only a junior. His trademark event, the individual medley, is where he has seen his greatest success — constantly writing and rewriting the 200 and 400-yard IM records. 

A lot of people would be bothered by the scoffs and dirty looks that come from wearing an opposing team’s jersey in Philly. But not the Patriots fans. In fact, they seem to enjoy it.

This time around, Super Bowl season actually matters for Philly, and Penn is getting in on the fun. As the Philadelphia Eagles get set to take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, Penn’s campus is filled with fervent support for the Birds. 

As Penn women’s squash (5-3, 1-1 Ivy) enters its main extended stretch of conference play this season of the season against Princeton (9-0, 2-0), the Red and Blue’s lineup will be bolstered by the recent return of senior No. 2 Melissa Alves, who went undefeated last season and is back for more.

A major part of the Big 5's special nature is the unparalleled relationships that the different coaches in the conference have with one another. These relationships, based on mutual respect, competitiveness, and shared experiences, create one of the most remarkable coaching fellowships in the country.

That team in the mid-80s got its season off to a prolific 10-0 start, and eventually finished the season with a 10-2 record. The men of 2018 currently stand at an 8-2 record, are ranked No. 5 in the nation, and are showing plenty of signs that their season can eclipse that of the 1985 team.

Of course, braving the sub-zero temperatures and seemingly endless bus rides was not purely for fun. This “vacation” was actually a NCAA-sanctioned international tour, which is allowed once every four years. And, with this being the lucky year, coach Jack Wyant took his squad north for the training retreat.

Call them the "Swaggy Six," or the "Super Sophs", or the "Bars Bunch"; no matter the alias, Penn gymnastics will be tough to beat this year due to a record-breaking crop of sophomores on the bars.

Though most programs would hesitate to refer to a two-season title hiatus as a drought, the mentality for Penn gymnastics is clear. It’s “championship-or-bust time” for the Red and Blue, and the 2018 squad is more than ready to do so.
