The Penn Relays have a way of sneaking up on the Penn community as a whole, and this year was no different. Tucked between Spring Fling and final exams, it’s understandable; this is an especially busy time of year for students on campus.

Penn baseball knew it would be in for its greatest test of the season this weekend against an evenly matched opponent in Columbia. The Quakers  took the field on Saturday tied for first place in the Ivy League's Lou Gehrig Division hoping to clinch the title by winning at least three out of the four games.

Freshman Abby Hong put up a strong performance on distance night for Penn.

There’s a saying that good things come in threes. At least, that’s what Penn women’s lacrosse would like to believe, as it continues on the path towards its third consecutive Ivy League Tournament title. As the 18th-ranked Quakers (11-3, 5-1 Ivy) welcome No. 24 Cornell to Franklin Field for Sunday’s final regular season contest, they hope to prevail in what will be the first of two consecutive matches between the teams.

Heavyweight Rowing

As the men’s heavyweight rowing team approaches the end of their season, the Red and Blue will be working to collect a pair of wins this weekend at the Adams Cup in Annapolis, MD.  Facing off against Harvard and Navy throughout the event, the heavyweights must maintain their dominant form exhibited last weekend in their convincing performance at the Blackwell Cup.

To paraphrase the famous hardball philosopher Yogi Berra, it’s deja vu all over again. For the second time in as many years, Penn baseball enters the final weekend of the regular season tied with Columbia atop the Ivy League’s Lou Gehrig Division. And for the second consecutive year, the Quakers (20-12, 14-2 Ivy) will face off with their foes from the Big Apple in a winner-take-all, four game series.

2012 Penn Relays

Jake Brenza is no stranger to the Penn Relays, but he’ll be seeing the meet from a different perspective this year. Brenza, who graduated from Penn last spring after throwing for Penn for four seasons, has remained at his alma mater this year as a volunteer assistant coach. “It’s something I love to do,” Brenza said of his desire to remain a part of the team.

Though sophomore Ashley Montgomery specializes in the mile, she will anchor Penn's talented 4x800-meter relay on Saturday in the championship final.

Track is a unique sport in that months of training all boil down to one race on one day that is over in a matter of minutes. The story is no different for Penn’s women’s 4x800-meter relay, as just nine minutesseparate four runners from glory. For the first time in nearly a decade, Penn will be represented in the championship heat for the 4x800m relay with a squad of junior Taylor Hennig, freshman Candace Taylor, and sophomores Ashley Montgomery and Carey Celata.

Heavyweight rowing coxswain Louis Lombardi plays an integral role in the Quakers' success despite never touching an oar A coxswain before he even arrived at Penn, Lombardi is responsible for keeping the rowers in synch and on track.

Betraying its graceful appearance, rowing is a sport of force, finesse and teamwork. In the fastest of boats, the eights, the intricacies of the sport require a ninth man who steers—both literally and psychologically—the vehicle as it cruises forward.
