In place of the annual Penn relays, the Philadelphia Metropolitan Collegiate Invitational, or “Philly Mets,” was held this past Saturday. The Red and Blue excelled in the localized athletic event. Among these standouts was Penn sophomore Michael Keehan, whose performance earned him DP Sports Player of the Week. 

This year, the Penn Relays sponsored the Philadelphia Metropolitan Collegiate Invitational (“Philly Mets”), a scaled-down version of the typical week-long extravaganza.

In addition to being two of Penn’s best singles players, Smith and Hildebrandt are Penn’s No. 1 doubles pairing this season.

The competition, which was hosted by Penn, was highlighted by a decent amount of seasonal-best marks for the Quakers, as well as a few performances that will stand tall in the Penn track and field record books.

Both the heavyweight and lightweight teams from Penn competed against schools in the greater Philadelphia area in the Kerr Cup regatta, including Temple, Drexel, Saint Joseph's, and Washington College. The event was officially hosted by Drexel.

Despite only being a freshman on the track team, Ben Kioko has already learned the importance of perseverance and self-efficacy in his sport.

The Quakers competed on the Schuylkill River in the 38th annual Murphy Cup Regatta hosted by Temple. The distance for this race was 2,000 meters and the conditions on the third were great for rowing.

Penn baseball showed some fight but ultimately could not overcome a four-run first inning from La Salle University as they lost 6-4 on Wednesday, handing the Explorers a temporary head-to-head edge on the season.

On Friday, the Red and Blue swept all six singles matches to cruise past the Wildcats. The next day, the Quakers used a strong showing in doubles to propel them to victory over the Dragons.
