McDonald's Can Cluck It

(11/16/10 9:35pm)

Outside McDonald's this afternoon, a bunch of Little People in chicken costumes marched in circles chanting, "I am not a nugget!" while their fellow PETA protesters gave out pamphlets for McCruelty.com and shouted, "Cluck you, McDonald's!" Also, they appeared to all emerge from a giant pink SUV stretch limo. None of this is an exaggeration. More photos after the jump.

Pet Some Animals RIGHT NOW

(11/13/10 8:13pm)

There is a petting zoo going on outside of Harrison! No, this isn't Spring Fling. It's obviously the Penn Energy (why not Pennergy?) Showdown. Apparently Harrison and Rodin are competing to see who can reduce their energy use the most over the course of the week. When we asked them what the animals were for, they said it was to "raise awareness." That makes sense, because we've heard llamas are huge on energy efficiency. Either way, they're cute and they're there for the petting!

If You Give A Mouse A Library Book...

(11/08/10 2:18pm)

He's not going to want it. Come on, you guys, mice can't read. Unless there is some Pinky & the Brain shit going on in Rosenparty, chances are this little guy just wants to stay warm and eat all your Mark's Cafe crumbs. In other news though, it would probably just be better if there weren't mice scurrying around the (otherwise flawless) art deco carpets of Van Pelt.

Penn Takes A Ride On The Loooove Train

(11/08/10 12:29am)

If you're in the mood for some mushy love stuff, here's a video of how some Canadian guy proposed to his girlfriend on the Mural Arts Program's Love Letter Tour, with the help of the Penn Singers and the Penn Glee Club singing the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love." The combination of strange train acoustics and a kind of awkwardly mumbled proposal makes this a little painful to watch, but it's still a pretty sweet sentiment, and as some guy in the background so graciously pointed out, "She said yes"

Philly Always Finds An Excuse To Party: South Street Bridge Edition

(11/07/10 7:42pm)

So while many of you were boozing it up at Penn-Princeton yesterday, there was a rather different kind of tailgate going on at the new and improved South Street bridge. Neighbors brought out their grills, their coolers and their card tables while bridge enthusiasts gathered to take photos and watch the West Powelton Steppers break it down. This soon led to a parade down South Street, led by Cool Dude Mayor Nutter (Penn alum!), who was all waves and smiles as he carried the step team banner to our final destination, a roped off area where we could drink beer outside and listen to live music. Awesome. More photos of the festivities after the jump!

TOMS Shoes at Civic House

(10/26/10 7:49pm)

Now that everyone's totally into voting and getting involved in the community and stuff, it seems like a pretty good time to invest in a pair of TOMS Shoes. Anti-Poverty Action Week 2010 is coming up, and Civic House is kicking it off on November 14th with the TOMS Shoes "Style Your Sole" event, where you can order a pair of white TOMS shoes and decorate them while learning about social entrepreneurship and social impact organizations.

Real Talk: Vampires Are Old

(10/21/10 8:24pm)

Hey, have you guys heard about this whole vampire craze thing? It really seems to be taking off – especially now that the biggest trendsetter we know (the Penn Museum) is hopping on board. Always on top of the zeitgeist, the museum is hosting an event tonight called "Vampires, Demons and Mystical Creatures in the Ancient World," in which a bunch of scholars will explain the origins of monster myths and tell you whether they are Team Edward or Team Jacob. And there will be cocktails! This graveyard smash starts at 6:15pm (right around twilight, haha!), and costs $5 for Penn Museum members and $10 for everyone else.

Snack Break: It's Food Week!

(10/19/10 6:10pm)

That's right, this week is dedicated to eating, discussing and celebrating food! And unlike the pricey prices of Restaurant Week (damn you, booze tab), everything about Food Week is totally free. Thanks to the Fox Leadership Program, there is an event every day this week highlighting issues about food in our community. We missed yesterday's kickoff, but you can find a full list of the rest of the week's events after the jump.

'South Park' Loves Penn, We Think

(10/07/10 4:47pm)

You know you've made it big when you get a cameo on South Park. And from the looks of this screenshot from last night's season premiere, the Penn football team helmet has done just that! In a scene that spoofs ESPN's Pardon the Interruption, the Penn name is displayed proudly next to an ESPN Etch-a-Sketch and behind that dude's shoulder. We assume that first letter is a P, at least. Hollywood, here we come!

(09/29/10 8:28pm)

Say Cheese (And Beer!) – Di Bruno Bros. know the way to our heart, and it is through free beer and cheese tastings every month on the Wednesday before First Fridays. Tonight's beer sampling of choice will be a Duck-Rabbit Brewery dark beer, and it is 10% off all purchases starting at 5pm! It's at their location on 9th & Christian, which is just an easy Septa ride away (we recommend the 40 bus) on the road to deliciousness.

Smokes Is Getting Retro Sushi, Or Something

(09/28/10 4:30pm)

Hey everybody, it's the 48th anniversary of Smokes' 30th year on campus! This is HUGE! So to celebrate this incredible occasion, Smokes is about to get super authentic with a weekly Mad Men happy hour. Groovy! And lucky for us, they've taken a leaf out of FroGro's Book of Great Ideas and are adding a "fresh" new sushi bar! Huh. Well, we're just going to have to take their word for it, because sushi from Smokes is not something that we foresee in the future of our bellies, ever.

Get Your Learn On At Drinker's West

(09/25/10 11:20pm)

Drinker's is throwing a back to school bash tonight! As per their lovely flyer, the theme of the night will be primarily educational, as an introductory level course in Partying. In addition to some neat drink specials from 8-11pm, there will also be all sorts of fun and educational activities, like the Naughty School Girl contest, Twister, PBR duels and more! Because what says "back to school" like badly behaved girls doing the limbo and spinning around baseball bats...?

FroGro: Something To Wine About

(09/23/10 7:19pm)

It's true: booze is coming to FroGro. According to a story in The DP, the liquor license posted on the door last week was referring to one of those newfangled wine kiosks that the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is trying to make happen–scheduled for about a month from now. But before you get your panties in a twist with thirsty excitement, you should know that there's a catch.

Wharton Has A Dean Of Happiness

(09/19/10 7:27pm)

Okay, we get it, being in Wharton is stressful. So stressful, in fact, that they actually have a "Dean of Happiness." As The DP reports, Wharton Deputy Vice Dean Kembrel Jones is all smiles and spare staplers for those Worry-Whartonites in need of some TLC. Giving out his cell phone number and taking a hands-on approach to student welfare, Jones keeps happiness levels in check like a business casual version of the Sims. We admit, this guy sounds like a pretty fun dude–now all we need is a Dean of Popsicles and a Dean of Really Good Naps.
