Protests Erupt Across Campus After University Replaces All Leavened Bread With Matzo

(04/12/17 6:24pm)

Late on Tuesday night, the University of Pennsylvania quietly removed all of its leavened, non-kosher-for-Passover breadstuffs from any university-operated restaurants and dining halls. Bread for sandwiches, toast, and French toast disappeared. Brioche and baguette alike, all leavened bread was taken to a secure location and destroyed. All were replaced with matzo.

Student "Doing Work" on College Green Accomplishes Literally Nothing for Four Hours

(04/11/17 9:28pm)

When College freshman Mindy Hill arrived in front of College Hall with a blanket, books, a laptop, and three friends who live on her hall but she doesn't really like, she was fully expecting to be productive. But after four hours, the only thing she'd succeeded in doing was achieving an impressive sunburn.

Evolution in Action? Junior Wearing Large Coat Today Didn't Even Feel Hot

(04/10/17 9:33pm)

Matt Ellton (W '18) got more than a few disapproving or confused looks today on Locust. Dressed in black jeans and a Moncler jacket, Ellton certainly appeared overdressed for such a warm, sunny day. Even his friends were confused by the sartorial choice, asking questions like "Aren't you warm?" and "You don't want to take that coat off, man?" Their queries were met with stoic nonchalance: "Nah, I'm fine."

Teen Writes 'I Love Money' 100 Times on Wharton Application, Gets In

(04/05/17 1:23am)

A teen from Princeton, NJ made headlines this week for his unorthodox application to Stanford University. Ziad Ahmed, a Muslim activist and blogger with a long list of impressive accomplishments, was accepted to Stanford after answering their application question "What matters to you, and why?" by repeating the hashtag "#BlackLivesMatter" 100 times. The story has been picked up by news outlets on the left and the right, and is quickly spreading across the internet.

Is When2Meat Penn Labs' Greatest Work?

(04/01/17 7:00pm)

Penn Labs is a student-run tech organization perhaps best known for Penn Course Review, a widely used website that helps students pick the easiest possible classes at a university intended to challenge them. The group is also responsible for a number of other Penn-relevant applications and websites, including Penn Mobile App and Penn Book Bazaar. These other services are not particularly useful in the search for easy A's, so we have never used them.

This Year's Fling Headliners Are Zedd and a Time Machine to 2012

(03/30/17 3:55am)

The performers for Spring Fling 2017 (Tinashe as opener, Zedd as headliner) were recently announced on 34th Street's website, and reactions are mixed. Some people are neutral or upset about Zedd headlining the concert, while others are just waking up from 4- or 5-year-long comas excited to see the man behind 2012 smash hit "Clarity".

OP-ED: Forget About Mental Health, I Just Want Free Printing

(03/28/17 7:52am)

These days, all people at Penn seem to talk about is mental health. Mental health this, mental health that. From the opinion pages of the DP to the meme pages of FB, students are complaining about the insufficient attention and funding given to mental health services on campus. This, it seems many would say, is one of Gutmann and her team's greatest failings. But aren't we all forgetting about something?

Penn Football's Private Group Chat Leaks, and It's Actually Really Nice

(03/28/17 7:59am)

With the leaks of highly offensive group chats and other online communications within all-male sports teams at Harvard University and Columbia University still fresh on the minds of many, perhaps it made sense to expect the worst when the Penn football team's entire group chat leaked late on the night of March 27. The leak included photos, videos, and thousands upon thousands of messages. Refreshingly, there was no need for alarm.

WATCH: This Amy Gutmann Video Op-Ed Is Either Terrible or Groundbreaking

(03/23/17 10:10pm)

Some videos are so bizarre that they seem fake, but this one appears to be very real. Seven years ago, Amy Gutmann contributed to the most incredible avant-garde video op-ed of our time. The director of this masterpiece also directed several music videos, including one in which Arnold Schwartzenegger tries to murder Guns N' Roses.

Anheuser-Busch Announces Plans to Introduce "Natty IPA" to College Markets

(03/23/17 5:35pm)

In the beginning, there was nothing. Then, Anheuser-Busch created Natural Light in 1977. More than a decade later came Natural Ice, a higher ABV ice beer introduced in 1995. In 2012 came the infamous Natty Daddy, a malt liquor to supplement the already-great offerings of the Natural brand. Now, a fourth member of the family is born.

Embarrassing: Penn Has 18% of the Total Break Days That Cornell Does

(03/21/17 9:06pm)

After the DP published a story about how short Penn's mid-semester breaks are how that may affect mental health on campus, we at UTB decided to do some digging. We checked the academic calendars of all the other Ivy League schools (yes, Cornell is an Ivy) to see how Penn's breaks stack up with those of its peers. The numbers, below, are shocking. These numbers do not include summer break.
