Attention broke-ass fools and barbecue enthusiasts: according to Citypaper's Meal Ticket blog, Doug Paletta, a Penn PhD candidate, has won free lunch at the incomparably delicious Percy Street BBQ for a whole year. As we see it, you've got only one choice: find a course he TAs for, enroll immediately, finagle your way into his recitation, and get as flirtatious and forthright as possible. Your stomach and tastebuds will thank you later (although your burnt out post-Kant brain might not).

Remember when we wrote about Take Ivy a couple of months ago? According to The New York Times, the reissued edition of the book has finally hit shelves. The volume of sartorial snapshots taken around Ivy League campuses in the 1960s was until recently extremely rare and highly coveted ($1,500 on eBay coveted), but now the masses finally have the chance to physically leaf through some images of vintage Penn. We're hoping it gives us a ShutterButton worthy peek into our schools' natty days of yore.

Some of our more loyal readers might remember the work of DJ Lubel, C'05. His ode to Murray Hill (the post-collegiate destination of many a douchebag) established him as an alumnus to watch, and it looks like he's really taken the Weird-Al-minus-the-pop-song-source-material act to a whole new level. The artfully produced "Masturbate For Life" features some pretty great looking credits, and ties in to his new album, "It's About To Get Awkward," which draws heavily on Lubel's sexual misadventures for inspiration. That said, the content of his single is fairly gross and the main joke treads some painfully well-worn territory (masturbating in high school? Say it ain't so!). This hasn't prevented the video from earning a 78% "Funny" rating, though, so kudos! Also, major points for featuring Luke from The OC.

Jeez, Penn is having a pretty serious TV moment. With all of these youngin'-oriented MTV appearances now firmly under the collective belt of our student body, it's high time the more established set had their moment in the sun, don't you think? Class of (anytime in the '90s) alums, have we got the spokesperson for you!

University City Dining Days, the infinitely more convenient step-sibling of the storied Restaurant Week, makes its extended two week debut starting July 15th. That's right - rather than the singular Restaurant Week, you will be granted the gift of two (plural) weeks of wallet friendly West Philadelphian fare. Are you counting down the seconds yet?

Penn has a fairly impressive fleet of accomplished alums: Elizabeth Banks, Louis Kahn, and TORY BURCH are just a few of the boldface names that have graced our fine campus. But how many of them have been featured in the July 2010 issue of Vanity Fair? NONE! For the aspiring billionaire super mogul in all of us, this month's issue has a rare interview with secretive hedge fund king and Penn alum Steven Cohen, complete with a photo editorial by the sought after (albeit financially illiterate) Annie Leibovitz.

Attention fitness gurus and lazy asses alike: all group exercise classes at Pottruck at completely FREE through July 2nd. If you have a valid PennID on hand (recent grads, we think this still includes you), just waltz right in and take a trial run of that Body Pump class you've been too stingy to indulge in. If you're the more aggressive type, we suggest taking the next step to Body Blitz, and if that doesn't do it for you, try BODY COMBAT! Spinning is also being offered, which (we hear) is great if you're a mom. Check out the full class listings and schedule here.

Our hometown boy Abdi Farah (C '09) was met with high praise in his Bravo debut on last night's premiere episode of Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. Even though he didn't take home the inaugural gold, he made it to the top three and wowed seasoned critics like Jerry Saltz and, um, China Chow. Although the preview for the rest of the season made it seem like he'd be going home before winning the grand prize (anyone else get that vibe?), we have high hopes for his performance in the rest of the season. What did you think? Give us your impressions of his work in the comments.

In news that seems directly out of a video game, these are either the most terrifying or most awesome things I think I've ever seen. The whirling dervishes in this video are the product of Penngineering's GRASP Lab, which seems to have perfected the nuances of four-rotor flight. Expect to see these hovering above every street corner in the post-apocalyptic future.

Regular patrons of Hub Bub might have noticed the presence of a new truck on the block this past week. Mojo, a coffee truck with roasting roots in the Big Easy (more here), opened up shop on the same stretch of 38th street as Penn alum Andrew Crockett's beloved Stumptown-serving standby. From an outside point of view, this looked like it had all the makings of a supremely competitive coffee truck rivalry. This could have been fun (maybe even resulting in a sabotage mystery?), but sadly, both proprietors are extremely polite and considerate of Philadelphia's obtuse commercial zoning laws. Snore.

This past Thursday, scientists from the J. Craig Venter Institute announced that they'd engineered a self-replicating bacterial cell using "off the shelf" chemicals and entirely synthetic ingredients. In the words of the Washington Post, they "creat[ed] life from scratch." Zounds!

As you may recall, Vice President Joe Biden was set to give the commencement speech for the School of Social Policy and Practice on Monday - and he did just that, delivering a speech that touched on many powerful themes and received a standing ovation.

The webcast is set up to start right alongside the ceremony itself at 9 a.m., but if being there in real time isn't your major priority, the whole thing will be archived later in the day. We'll be posting the highlights after viewing it on our own time.
