Every year, Brynn Connor looks forward to the day when she can be Penn field hockey’s honorary captain, and you can see the pride in her face as she leads the team onto the field. She feels like a part of the team because she is a part of the team — a team that believes in her. The sense of family that the group creates for her makes the 11-year-old feel like another one of the girls. She is Brynn, number 00 for Penn field hockey.

September 2013 — An 11-year-old girl nervously skims through her speech on her iPad before addressing a full crowd of students at Arrowhead High School in one of the first ever “Gold in September” games. She might have been too anxious at that moment to take it all in, but she was setting the foundation for the start of an incredible movement — one motivated by the desire to honor her brother’s legacy.

After a third-place finish in the Ivy League last season, Penn field hockey kicked off its season in Chapel Hill, N.C. for the annual Ivy League/ACC crossover, where it faced No. 9 Louisville and No. 2 UNC. Despite losing both games, the Quakers were competitive. The DP sat down with senior captains Elita van Staden, Meghan Ward, and Gracyn Banks to talk about these games and the team's outlook for the rest of the season.
