While not many would think that a game where the victor extended its win streak from eight to nine an upset, Penn women’s basketball’s win over Columbia certainly counts as one. When the team entered the Palestra on an early January Saturday night, the Lions were 13-2 and had just defeated Princeton, the team that would ultimately go on to win the Ivy League Championship. The Quakers swiftly halted the Lions' momentum, though, defended home court and emerged with a 71-67 victory.

After a disappointing 7-6-3 record in 2021 — including a subpar 1-4-2 against Ivy opponents, Penn men’s soccer came into 2022 with something to prove. And prove they did: the Quakers won an Ivy title, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and finished with a 13-3-2 overall record.

Penn football alumnus Justin Watson has reportedly signed a new, two-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. The deal will keep Watson under contract until 2025, and for the Chiefs, this ensures that they will return another important piece of their Super Bowl LVII-winning receiving core.

While many incoming students were getting their first taste of Penn’s campus during Quaker Days, men’s lacrosse escaped the throngs of high schoolers and traveled north to Cambridge, Mass. to face Harvard. Once there, the team loudly announced its presence with a 15-9 win over the Crimson, driven by a dominant second-half performance.

On Tuesday, the Big 5 announced some of the biggest changes to its signature men's basketball competition in its history. Firstly, it's name is no longer truthful; Drexel will now compete for a Big "5" championship alongside the five original members of Penn, La Salle, St. Joe's, Villanova, and Temple. But perhaps more substantially is the changing nature of the tournament.

Following the conclusion of the men's and women's basketball season, The Daily Pennsylvanian analyzed data for both Penn teams to find out what made this season stand out. Additionally, the DP looked at which statistics were most different in wins and losses to attempt to deduce both teams' keys to victory. To conduct this analysis, the DP used season-long and game-by-game data from Penn Athletics for the 2022-23 Penn basketball seasons.

Last season, Penn lost to Brown in the regular season at Franklin Field, before defeating the Bears in Providence, R.I., during the Ivy League Tournament. While there is still another month before the Ivy League Tournament, the first part of last year’s story repeated itself on Saturday, with Brown defeating Penn 12-11.

Following a loss to its rival in Princeton to end its Ivy League Tournament Championship hopes, Penn women’s basketball headed south to Virginia for the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament. But what greeted them once they arrived in Richmond was a strong Spiders squad which decimated the Quakers for all 40 minutes of a 75-52 win.

This year, Jordan Dingle put up one of the most impressive seasons in Penn history.
