My Pennsylvania driver’s license expired on my graduation day this past May (along with my U.S. student visa, in case anyone’s keeping track). Since I am 22 years old and need my license for some obvious identification purposes, I set out to a nearby Department of Motor Vehicles to renew it. While most residents are eligible for online renewal, non-citizens aren’t offered the same courtesy.
I wouldn’t call myself a huge sports fanatic. I watched my first football game in 2006 (the Steelers-Seahawks Superbowl at 2 a.m. because of the time difference) and have been interested in the sport ever since. As much as I love watching Penn play football, I love the team more. Maybe it’s the toast, maybe it’s the team’s spirit — I don’t know which, but I know I love going to Quaker games.
Even though I’m from Germany, I’ve been celebrating Thanksgiving with American friends since my junior year of high school. I even cooked a 22-pound turkey last fall when I was abroad in London. I’ve personally never spent a Thanksgiving break on campus, but I would imagine it’s not exactly uplifting, especially for an international student far away from family.
Penn’s Green Campus Partnership conducted a University-wide power-down hour this past summer. Employees were asked to switch off lights and printers, unplug laptops and phone chargers and to refrain from using computers and other appliances for an hour. In the office where I worked, my colleagues used this time to organize their desks — I met with my boss to plan the upcoming month.
The incoming freshman class, as well as having the distinction of being the best class Penn has ever accepted, may also be the neediest. Because of an increased reliance on technology, they will require close connections with their professors, almost-constant e-mail contact and will attend the most office hours.
College students often struggle under the constraints of the sector and foundation requirements, but what if they had to contend with the Wharton core or Nursing clinicals on top of it? College students with single majors often have trouble finding time for things like extracurricular activities or study abroad, and yet countless students continue to apply to dual-degree programs.
New Student Orientation is one of the most exhilarating and exciting experiences at Penn. In fact, it's the only time it's okay to friend hundreds of complete strangers on Facebook you claim you met at a party. However, in between getting to know your hallmates, Philadelphia and the University, there's one activity that give you a peek of what lies ahead: the Penn Reading Project.

With the class of 2013 admitted, Penn Previewed and ready to register, the financial-aid application fears are mostly nonexistent among our newest pre-frosh. The taxes have been returned, the forms have been meticulously filled out and the aid notices have been received (albeit with mixed reactions). Basically, there's not much that can be done now. The only ones who may still have concerns are the international students.
Last week residents of Gregory College House, received an e-mail informing us that Facilities would be replacing the showerheads with new, water-conserving models. I was very impressed - the Oxygenics showerheads will save millions of gallons of water and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions (natural gas is used to heat the water). It is also predicted that the costs of the showerheads and installations will be offset just four months after the replacement.
While some are packing bikinis, tanning lotion and flip-flops, my spring-break destination only requires snow boots, long johns and my trusty earmuffs. It certainly isn't Mexico, but the plane ticket was much cheaper, and I won't have to worry about falling asleep on the beach (again).
As I walked to Fisher-Bennett last October, armed and ready to declare my major, I quickly mapped out my life. A B.A. from Penn, a semester abroad and a few extracurriculars should be enough for a decent start in life. But I slowed and thought to myself, "I can't just be an English major. I need something useful, too." At the time, I was planning on double-majoring in English and cognitive science: English because I enjoy it and cognitive science because . well, it has the word "science" in it, and that tends to get people places.
Over winter break, I spent hours and hours poring over the registrar's Web site to find that elusive double whammy: that course that fulfills multiple requirements and has an easy course rating and a high professor rating. I finally found the gem that is "Introduction to the Koran," which fills Cross Cultural Analysis and Sector IV, interdisciplinary humanities and social sciences - perfect.
'Can I see your I.D.?" might sound different from "Ausweis, bitte" but, in essence, they're both harboring the same doubt: You don't look old enough to buy alcohol. To some at Penn, this isn't viewed as a nuisance - they may see it as a necessary evil or as a non-issue.
