The disproportionate number of women in leadership positions is a problem at both the national and local levels — Penn is no exception. We applaud Ariel Koren, president of the Class Board of 2015, for earning an influential role on campus and for her conviction in a recent guest column that “every student here is perfectly positioned to effect a change.” However, to say that Penn is free of obstacles to female leadership is inaccurate and misleading. As leaders, we have all encountered obstacles specific to women in pursuing and fulfilling our roles.

A lot of people don’t care about student government. And I’m fine with that. As someone who has been on the Undergraduate Assembly for the entirety of my Penn career, I understand that students care about the organizations in which they are involved, the classes that they elect to take and the friends they choose to make. My role on the UA is to engage you through your involvements on campus and, in doing so, make sure that you have the resources that you need in order to maximize your undergraduate years here at Penn.

Penn is comprised of myriad thriving communities. What it lacks, however, is an overarching community to bring together all these groups, a communal pride in being a part of Penn. As Vice President, it is my goal to create a community of communities and, in effect, foster Penn Pride. I aim to do this by promoting unity, relevancy and representation.
