At a summer camp in the suburbs of St. Louis, children are not allowed to have their phones. Scattered across the playground, they trade Pokémon cards and make up dual-syllable languages. One group, squeezed around one tower, plays Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza. Another makes rainbow looms. As much as I do not understand “me-me,” retreat costs, or the camp-wide popularity of Frozen 2, I communicate with these children comfortably.

In response to Philadelphia’s historic increase in gun violence last year, Councilmember and Penn alumna Jamie Gauthier introduced a bill calling on Mayor Jim Kenney to take actionable steps to address the issue and declare a citywide emergency on gun violence. Kenney, however, has yet to act on the resolution — prompting members of the Philadelphia community to act in solidarity for its adoption.

Engineering and College sophomore Julia Lottman tested positive for COVID-19 the first week she returned from her spring break trip to Barcelona, Spain in March 2020. After feeling normal for a couple days, she soon developed fatigue and severe body aches, leading to a two-week quarantine in her basement.

Sexual assault may seem like a distant fear for some, but on college campuses, it is an everyday reality. Of course, the combination of freedom and alcohol creates a dangerous environment and enhances teens’ raging hormones, thus increasing the likelihood of assault occurring. But the problem does not entirely arise from students seeking to indulge in the pleasures of college life. The problem partly stems from sex education, or the lack thereof.

“I just can’t wait to get out of here.” It’s a phrase that’s been thrown around by most teens for years, but has suddenly made an urgent resurgence in the past month. For me personally, the only light at the end of the tunnel has been the optimistic promise that we’ll be back on campus in three months. Regardless of advancements, or lack thereof, in vaccinations, Penn should at least partially re-open for the spring semester.

Penn students are long awaiting an email from President Amy Gutmann announcing the University’s official decision for the upcoming academic year. The latest email, sent on May 21, details four major scenarios in consideration. All four scenarios consider some extent of online classes, and thus, it is clear that the 2020-2021 academic year will not be like any other academic year before.
