Performance of the year: Tiago Socarras’ fourth-place finish at NCAA Indoor Nationals

Socarras’ performance at NCAA Indoor Nationals earned him a first-team All-America nod in the 800-meter run.

Freshman phenom and indoor 800 meter program record holder Joseph "Tiago" Socarras put on two of the best performances of the Quakers’ indoor track and field season in the preliminary and final rounds of the 800-meter race at the NCAA Division I Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

Socarras wasted no time making a name for himself this season, breaking Penn’s indoor 800-meter record multiple times during the season — his fastest time a blazing 1:46.28. With this time being in the top 12 in the NCAA, Socarras secured a trip to NCAA Indoor Nationals, making him just one of two Quakers to qualify this indoor season.

In the prelims, the freshman lined up against some of the biggest names in middle-distance running, mainly upperclassmen, with the likes of Georgetown’s Tinoda Matsatsa, Oregon’s James Harding, and Penn State’s Handal Roban toeing the line with him.

But as Socarras described on an episode of the Quaker Nation podcast, he didn’t let the level of competition distract him from his ultimate goal.

“I realized in the back of my mind I was like ‘I’m trying to win this whole thing,’” Socarras said.

As an underdog, Socarras secured the last qualifying spot for the finals, beating out many of the top runners who had run faster times during the 2026 indoor season. But what Socarras did the following day put him on the map beyond the Ivy League. The freshman ran a time of 1:46.97, his second-fastest time in the event to date, and finished fourth overall out of the eight runners in the final. He was the only underclassman to finish in the top five and earned First Team All America honors, capping off a stellar freshman season.
