Her Place Supper Club — a Philadelphia restaurant owned by 2015 College graduate Amanda Shulman — received a Michelin star on Tuesday.

Shulman, who also serves as head chef, was honored at a ceremony held at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts on Nov. 18. Her Place, which first opened as a pop-up in June 2021, is Philadelphia’s first restaurant to receive a Michelin star.

Her Place specializes in French and Italian cuisines with Jewish influences and is open between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The restaurant seats 24 guests at each time, and the menu changes every three weeks.

On the restaurant's website, Shulman describes Her Place as a “restaurant but kind of like a dinner party.”

“Imagine showing up to your mom's friend's house for dinner and just eating whatever she makes — it's a little like that,” she added.

Shulman, who studied political science at Penn and wrote for 34th Street Magazine, first started cooking in her campus apartment.

“[The supper clubs were] how I really got into cooking,” Shulman told 34th Street in September 2021. “I would go down to the Italian Market and buy cheeses or get a whole pig and carry it up.”

“I would make my Facebook status: four courses, 35 bucks, message me if you want to come,” she added.

The restaurant’s name is derived from Shulman's supper clubs, which she later hosted in New York as well. She told 34th Street in 2021 that she would invite guests to the gatherings via email, calling them “Her Place.”

In a post shared to Instagram, Shulman wrote that she was "genuinely stunned" at the award and "had zero expectations" for the win.

“I don't want to single myself out as elite because when I was having my own thoughts about who I thought was going to be recognized, I didn't see myself winning a star,” she added in an interview with CBS.

Shulman was also honored as a nominee for the 2025 James Beard Awards in April and named one of Food & Wine Magazine’s best new chefs in 2023.
