1999 College graduate John Legend has now achieved the coveted EGOT status — bestowed upon those who have received the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards. On Sept. 9, Legend became the first black man and the second youngest person ever in the prestigious group as he took home the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special for to his role as producer on "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert." Legend has previously won 10 Grammy Awards, one Oscar Award for Best Original Song with "Glory" in 2015, and, most recently, one Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play as the co-producer of "Jitney" in 2017.
To mark his achievement, The Daily Pennsylvanian looks back at his time here at Penn, and his interactions with the University and the student community after his graduation. Most notably, he delivered the 2014 Commencement address. He has also written for the DP, in a guest column outlining his thoughts on education inequality and the work done by Teach For America. During his time at Penn, he was most remembered for his performances as part of the a cappella group Counterparts.
