You don't usually hear about the American flag getting banned from any part of an American University.
But that's exactly what happened at the California Irvine this week, as the student government of the University banned the American flag from its lobby after a vote that narrowly passed.
The resolution said that the flag can symbolize America's “exceptionalism and superiority," and can be seen as hate speech. This came after the flag, which hung on a wall in the student government's suite, was taken down a few weeks ago anonymously but was placed back on the wall soon after.
California State Senator Janet Nguyen said the state legislature may introduce a state constitutional amendment that would not allow state-funded Universities to ban the American flag.
