While Penn students took to Amtrak or the airport for a quick trip out of Philadelphia for Fall Break, Penn athletes boarded their usual buses as Ivy seasons continued for many teams. Here’s the action you missed while you were apple picking:

M. Soccer: Penn 3, Columbia 2

The situation was bleak for Penn after the Lions went up 2-0 in the first seven minutes at Columbia (4-6-1, 1-1 Ivy) Saturday night. Then senior captain Thomas Brandt stepped up.

The back headed in a free kick from sophomore Alex Reddy 33 minutes into the half to put Penn (6-4-1, 1-1) on the board, and then just before halftime sent a missile in from 25 yards out to tie the game.

Freshman goalkeeper Max Kurtzman held the Lions scoreless in the second half, and senior Christian Barreiro played the hero for Penn, sinking a shot from just inside the 18-yard box with 44 seconds remaining.

W. Soccer: Penn 2, Columbia 0

While the men’s team fought back from an early 2-0 deficit, coach Darren Ambrose’s crew netted two early goals and never looked back in a 2-0 victory over Columbia (4-7, 2-1 Ivy) Friday in New York.

Sophomore Kat Barth scored an unassisted goal in the sixth minute to put Penn (9-2, 2-1) ahead early, while senior midfielder Theresa Yankovich nailed in a shot to the upper-right corner of the goal from 25 yards out.

The victory, and Penn’s eighth shutout this season, keeps the Quakers in contention for a second-straight Ivy championship. Both the Red and Blue and Columbia trail undefeated Harvard by one game.

Field Hockey: UC Davis 3, Penn 1

California Davis (3-8, 1-1 NorPac) finished up an East Coast swing with a win over Penn (2-8, 1-2 Ivy) after losses to Virginia and La Salle last week.

The Aggies got on the board with two quick goals and that would be all they needed. Penn’s offense came on a goal from Helene Caniglia, assisted by Julie Tahan, who leads the team with nine points this season. Senior goaltender Kieran Sweeney made a career-high 16 saves.

Sprint Football: Penn 48, Post 35

In its second season in the Collegiate Sprint Football League, Post (1-2, 1-2 CSFL) didn’t look like newcomers, giving the Quakers (2-1, 1-1) a run for their money in a second-half comeback that fell short.

Penn picked up its first CSFL win of the season after amounting a 35-0 first-half lead. Freshman running back Mike Beamish ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns, only to be outdone by veteran quarterback Todd Busler, who threw for 200 and tossed 4 TDs.

Volleyball: Penn 3, Cornell 1; Columbia 3, Penn 2

The Quakers (6-9, 2-3 Ivy) split their Ivy road trip through New York, earning a tough win over Cornell (3-13, 0-5) Friday night before falling in five roller-coaster sets at Columbia (10-5, 4-1) Saturday.

In the loss, five Quakers had double-digits in digs, as Dani Shepherd had 39. Junior Amanda Pacheco had a team-high 33 kills on the weekend.
