A 20-year-old man jumped from the third floor of the D building of Hamilton Court at 101 S. 39th Street around 12 a.m. Saturday in a suicide attempt, according to Philadelphia Police spokeswoman Jillian Russell. His name and medical condition could not be disclosed.

Kevin Rurak, executive assistant to the Vice President for Public Safety at Penn, confirmed Saturday that the man was a Drexel University student. Rurak refused to comment further as the incident is being handled by the Drexel University Department of Public Safety.

A resident of the building wrote in an e-mail Saturday that she heard “a scream and then smack” when the man fell. She also wrote there was “a pool of blood” outside the building door after the incident occurred.

Drexel University DPS and University officials declined to comment. “The University’s Department of Public Safety and Office of Student Life are supporting the student and the student’s family during this critical time,” Drexel News Bureau Director Niki Gianakaris wrote in a news release.

Daniel Klein, manager at University City Housing — the landlord for Hamilton Court — explained the protocol in an emergency situation is to “first contact the proper authorities, which our staff did Saturday night.”

“We are involved as much as the police and medical responders need us to be,” said Klein, who would not release details on the incident.

The second step would be to send a mass e-mail if any tenants are in jeopardy, “which in this case no one was,” Klein added.
