The forecast for Philadelphia this weekend might not be sunny, but there’s definitely a chance of Greek.
Today marks the start of Penn’s five-day Greek Weekend, organized by the Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council and Multicultural Greek Council to celebrate Greek life on campus.
The weekend’s festivities will include a variety of philanthropic, academic and social events. The theme — “It’s Always Greek in Philadelphia” — was inspired by the popular television sitcom, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
The “biggest addition” to Greek Weekend this spring will be a free barbecue tailgate on Friday night before Penn’s women’s lacrosse team takes on Northwestern University, according to Wharton junior and IFC President Christian Lunoe.
“We’re trying to get people involved in Penn Athletics,” Lunoe said. He added that organizers made a conscious effort to ensure events during Greek Weekend are “well-rounded” and engage the wider Penn community.
For the academically inclined, a Faculty Tea will be held at Psi Upsilon, also known as Castle.
“We’re expecting around 50 professors and over 100 Greeks,” Castle president and Engineering junior Robin Marcenac wrote in an e-mail.
He added that the event, catered by Naked Chocolate, will be “the ideal opportunity” for students to get to know their professors on a more personal level.
Today: Letter Day Thursday, 4-6 p.m.: Faculty Tea at Castle Friday, 3 p.m.: Powderpuff Football at 40th Street Field Friday, 6 p.m.: Tailgate at Franklin Field Lot 6 Saturday, 12 p.m.: Campus Cleanup at OFSA Saturday, 10 p.m.: Block Party Sunday, 4 p.m.: Academic Bowl in Huntsman G06
Events aimed at increasing friendly competition between chapters on campus include the Friday’s annual Powderpuff Football Game, a football tournament between the various sororities, as well as a charity kickball tournament on Saturday, organized by Chi Omega sorority and Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) fraternity.
According to College junior and Panhel Executive Vice President Brooke Patkin, a “Quizzo-style” Academic Bowl will be held Sunday night, and will be an entertaining event, as “people get really competitive.”
However, the event that will “bring together the whole Penn community” will be a campus-wide Block Party on Saturday night, Patkin said.
Three fraternity houses, Sigma Chi, Delta Psi (St. A’s) and Pike will serve alcohol to students over 21, and another three — Phi Kappa Sigma (Skulls), Phi Delta Theta and Phi Kappa Psi — will host “dry” parties.
According to Patkin, the president and another member from each fraternity and sorority will volunteer for “Team Sober” to patrol parties and ensure that they are safe.
