Two and a half weeks before they officially take the field, Penn women’s lacrosse has been ranked No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Division I poll — two spots higher than their previous best last season.
Coming off a perfect 7-0 Ivy season in 2009 — their third consecutive Ivy Championship — the Quakers are poised to take down the field again this year. In each of the last three seasons the Quakers have also charged their way into the NCAA Final Four as well.
The Quakers garnered 354 votes in the poll, only 46 behind unanimous first-choice, Northwestern. The No. 1 Wildcats beat Penn last year, 11-9, when they faced off on April 25, and again in double overtime, 13-12, in the national semi-final match. Maryland received 376 votes to take the No. 2 spot.
Four of the eight Ivy teams are ranked in the top 20 this year, with Princeton at No. 9, Dartmouth at No. 15 and No. 19 Cornell rounding out the field.
To accompany their top ranking, the Quakers will see some of the nation’s top teams, facing Northwestern, Maryland, and No. 4 North Carolina over the spring.
Their first draw will be against neighborhood rival Drexel on Feb. 27.
