Radian residents 'pregame' on Friday night

Event sponsored by apartment building includes games, music and a $1,500 drawing

Radian residents 'pregame' on Friday night

In Penn's College Houses, Resident Advisors coordinate ice-breaking games for students, but mavericks, the Radian's equivalent of RAs, get the party started for their residents.

Last Friday, the Radian's inhabitants had the chance to start their night on the 11th floor club room at a Radian-sponsored "pregame."

The event, which had been advertised around the building last week, included a frozen margarita machine, Rock Band, beer pong and flip cup, according to the Radian's Web site.

The party lasted from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., with DJ Tommy Tunes' stylings echoing in the background for the roughly 40 people in attendance, according to College sophomore Stephanie Siaw.

"It was kind of nuts," she said. "There was food, drinks, music - and we got free T-shirts."

As a resident of the Radian, she said she usually never attends the maverick-planned activities such as the Finals Study Break or the Cook-off Challenge.

However, she said, this one had an appealing catch: Residents who have renewed their lease were eligible to enter a raffle drawing to win $1,500. Plus, the winning beer pong team received a $50 Visa Gift Card.

College sophomore Kate Arian was the recipient of the $1,500 check, even though she didn't originally plan on attending the pregame.

She actually wandered up to the 11th floor because of her craving for chips.

"I'm really excited," Arian said. "Thank god I was hungry or otherwise I would be $1,500 poorer."

She added that the huge check is now placed, as a kind of trophy, above her TV.

"The event was a huge success and the margaritas were delicious!" the Maverick blog on the Radian Web site said.

College freshman Cindy Berman, who just signed her lease for an apartment at the Radian next year, was impressed by the activities the mavericks' plan.

"It looks like a really fun place to live," she said. "You're not bombarded by [resident advisors], and at the same time you're not totally independent."
