Name and Title: Sen. John Sidney McCain III

Birthday: Aug. 29, 1936

Birthplace/Where he has lived: McCain was born on a military base in the Panama Canal Zone when it was under U.S. sovereignty. He grew up in Alexandria, Va. and currently resides in Phoenix, Ariz.

Education: McCain attended Episcopal High School, a private preparatory boarding school in Alexandria, and graduated in 1954. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1958 followed by flight school in 1960. He also attended the National War College from 1973 to 1974.

Previous Jobs: McCain was a Captain in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1981 and the Navy liaison to the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 1981.

For his military service, McCain was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross.

After serving as a vice president of Hensley & Company, the Phoenix-area Anheuser-Busch distributor, McCain was elected Congressman of Arizona's First District in 1982.

McCain attempted a presidential bid in 2000 but dropped out of the race on March 9 after his Super Tuesday losses, and instead endorsed George W. Bush.

Current Job: Senior Senator from Arizona.

During a bombing mission in 1967, McCain's ship was struck by a missile and a deadly fire sparked on board. McCain escaped but was taken as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam later that year.
