Clark Park was one of six green spaces in Philadelphia to receive part of a $2 million grant, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter announced Saturday.
The grant - half from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and half from the city of Philadelphia - was a result of requests from "very, very supportive neighborhood groups that are willing to make things happen," DCNR deputy press secretary Terry Brady said.
Clark Park, located at 4400 Baltimore Ave., received $450,000, which went toward the renovation of the portion of the park between Baltimore and Chester avenues.
Most of the spaces receiving funds in Philadelphia are located in urban areas.
"Usually, let's face it, the open spaces are in suburban, rural areas," Brady said, explaining that the DCNR wanted to steer the grants toward urban areas.
Deputy press secretary Luke Butler of the mayor's office expressed a similar sentiment. "It's always been a priority of the mayor's to encourage open spaces in urban spaces," he said.
