In a press conference yesterday, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter outlined his new initiatives to fight homelessness in the city.
Nutter's plan includes a partnership with the Philadelphia Housing Authority to create 700 new housing units for homeless Philadelphia residents.
Of these 700, 300 will be for couples and families, 200 for individuals, 125 for the chronically homeless and 75 "safe-haven" beds for individuals with acute addictions or behavioral problems.
"The issue of homelessness affects every Philadelphian," Nutter said at the press conference. "The initiatives announced today are the first steps in this administration's committed effort to reducing homelessness and helping move individuals and families into permanent housing."
PHA Executive Director Carl Greene, Deputy Mayor for Health and Opportunity Don Schwarz and Director of the Department of Behavioral Health Arthur Evans also joined Nutter at the press conference.
