Harriet Joseph, who currently serves as interim director of the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, was appointed director of the center, administrators announced Tuesday.
Provost Ron Daniels said that Joseph was chosen after a "comprehensive national search" led by Associate Provost Andrew Binns.
Joseph's strong record as an educator and advisor has played a leading role in CURF's achievements since its establishment six years ago.
"Building on her deep knowledge of Penn and CURF, she has the insight and experience to take its programs to the next level," Daniels said.
Joseph said she looks forward to strengthening undergraduate research on campus by expanding resources and helping students navigate opportunities.
"There are a lot of undergraduates clamoring to get involved in research but are unsure of where to start," Joseph said.
Her plans include securing increased funding, holding more accessible informational sessions and involving the College House system in promoting opportunities.
Daniels noted Joseph's key role in developing the successful Provost's Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program, through which undergraduates work directly with faculty on high-level research projects around the world.
Joseph said she hopes to continue strengthening the pipeline from research to fellowships by targeting and engaging students early on in their college careers in order to continue what has been a "slam-dunk year" for awards.
College junior Hayling Price, one of two Penn students awarded the Truman Scholarship this year, said he appreciated Joseph's guidance and support throughout the application and interview process.
"She went above and beyond in preparing us for the award," Price said. "We couldn't have done it without her."
Joseph added that she will continue to help CURF develop its offerings while balancing a small staff and scarce funds. "I'm really excited and looking forward to hearing from students and faculty with suggestions," she said.
Before she became an associate director of CURF in 2002, Joseph spent seven years as director of the Alumni Council on Admissions and six years as assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. She has served as interim director since last fall, replacing former director Art Casciato, who left to pursue a similar office at another university.
