If you're looking to get out of the city for a bit and you're ready for a little adventure, Max and David's in Elkins Park, Pa. is just the place for you.
Not only is this newly opened BYO kosher - a perk for those like me, who keep these strict dietary regulations - but it is also a culinary experience you will likely not forget.
When I walked into the restaurant, I immediately felt the warm ambiance created by the subtle orange decor.
The staff - most of whom are related to owners Steven and Robin Katz - was incredibly courteous. We were seated immediately, and our waitress was ready to serve with a warm smile.
Executive chef Jared Cohen, formerly of Tangerine, does not spare any detail - down to the delicious fresh onion bread, shipped daily from New York.
This great attention to detail was certainly present throughout the entire meal. My appetizer, tea-infused duck breast with roasted pear, served over arugula with pomegranate vinaigrette ($8.50) had an incredibly distinct flavor: The sweet vinaigrette was savory, yet light enough so that I could really taste the duck and the smoked pears .
My dinner date ordered avocado and jicama salad with smoked vegetable salsa ($7.50). This was no ordinary salsa; it had smoked fresh tomatoes, a touch of jalapeno, distinct cilantro and was perfectly complemented by the jicama and avocado.
The main dishes are no slouch either. Each has a little twist - you won't be eating corn beef on rye with chicken soup here. Instead, you can eat Texas Barbecue Smoked Beef Brisket with Veggie Slaw ($22) or Bistro Steak Frites ($23.50)). I ate the delicious special of the day, lamb tagine with couscous and vegetables.
General manager Linda Greif urged us not to leave without the homemade gelato, which comes in flavors like chocolate-coconut, halva and mint chocolate chip. We were told that on New Year's Eve, the chef even made champagne-flavored gelato. And this was non-dairy gelato, in keeping with the Jewish kosher restrictions.
Max and David's is perfect for a date or outing with a friend when you're looking for a departure from the usual Philadelphia scene.
Now all I have to do is sit there long enough to find a husband.
