PA Hospital hosts 'Smokeout' event

Thanksgiving may be around the corner, but smokers and their allies weren't going cold turkey at the Great American Smokeout health fair and information expo.

Research shows smokers are most successful at kicking the habit when they have positive support, which event organizers hoped to instill in attendees.

About 140 people attended the Smokeout, which was held at the Joan Karnell Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital.

"I hope people became more inspired to learn some real tips and tools for quitting smoking for good," said Lee-Ann Landis, Pennsylvania Hospital's public-affairs officer.

Support and educational resources included information about counseling, guides to new therapies and expert advice from physicians.

The event also featured live music, art exhibits, raffles and a silent auction.

The free event was held for the second year by the Cancer Center as part of a national campaign to help people quit smoking.

"The Joan Karnell Cancer Center is committed to helping area residents quit smoking and get started on a healthy and smoke-free life," said Cancer Center administratror Mary Pat Lynch in a press release.
